Volunteer Guides

At QAGOMA, our Volunteer Guides help connect people with art, ideas and each other.

Guides welcome visitors into the Queensland Art Gallery and Gallery of Modern Art through daily tours, conversations and other ways of engaging with the Collection and exhibitions. Guiding is not simply about sharing information or having all the answers. It is about creating space for people to look, think, question, exchange ideas and experience art in their own ways.

When recruiting, we look for people who are curious, open-minded and enjoy engaging with diverse audiences. An interest in contemporary art and a willingness to keep learning are important. Experience or study in visual arts or art history is desirable, but curiosity and the ability to host a good conversation — to listen and make space for different perspectives — are equally valued.

We welcome people from a broad range of backgrounds, experiences, languages and communities. Fluency in languages other than English (LOTE) is particularly welcomed as we continue to develop LOTE and multilingual guiding programs, alongside In Conversation events and Access and Inclusion initiatives.

Volunteer Guides are expected to:

  • communicate confidently and warmly with diverse audiences
  • undertake ongoing learning, research and preparation
  • work collaboratively as part of a volunteer community
  • be comfortable using digital technologies
  • commit to guiding one day a fortnight, alongside a program of ongoing professional development opportunities
  • participate in training, exhibition talks and professional learning
  • commit to being an active Volunteer Guide for at least two years.

Volunteer Guiding is an unpaid community role and does not constitute a pathway to paid employment with QAGOMA.

Information sessions
Interested in becoming a QAGOMA Volunteer Guide? Information sessions for the 2027 Volunteer Guide intake will take place at QAGOMA in late November 2026.

Attendance at a one-hour information session is essential for anyone wishing to apply for the upcoming intake. These sessions are a chance to find out more about the guiding program, how the Gallery supports its volunteers, and what is involved in making a commitment as a Volunteer Guide. There will also be an opportunity to ask questions, hear from current Guides and learn about the 2027 application process.
