About
Tracey Moffatt is a provocative storyteller, with a reputation as one of Australia's most internationally recognised contemporary artists. Drawing on influences from popular culture, cinema, art history, socio-political events and personal experience, she creates narrative driven artworks that are both unsettling and deeply poetic.
‘I have never been very interested in capturing reality with a camera, but rather creating my own version of reality. I can use fiction to comment on my own personal history or serious issues of social history or reflect on what is going on in the current political landscape.’
Tracey Moffatt, 2017
Over four decades of dedicated experimentation with photographic processes a mastery of the medium is brought to bear in ‘Tracey Moffatt: Journeys – Gift of Dr Paul Eliadis AM’. ‘Journeys’ is a collection of moody, cinematic encounters with memory and history that were originally commissioned for the Australia Pavilion at the 2017 Venice Biennale. The haunting images explore universal human desires across fantastical and psychological landscapes where fictions can reveal truths.
The artworks in ‘Tracey Moffatt: Journeys’ ask viewers to inhabit uncertainty, blurring the boundaries between fact and fiction, past and present, individual experience and collective history.
