When disillusioned journalist Locke (Jack Nicholson) travels to Chad to interview rebel fighters, the death of a fellow occupant in a remote hotel leads him to abandon his own life and take on a new identity on a whim. Knowing little about the man he has become, he sets off on a journey through Europe to discover his new past, and to evade pursuers with the help of an unnamed girl (Maria Schneider). Michaelangelo Antonioni’s existential masterpiece is an absorbing exploration of identity and the unshakeable weight of the past.
