良夜不能留 (The Night) 2021

Shot in Hong Kong’s Causeway Bay in November 2019, this short film is a wordless study of a city-state at a political and cultural crossroads. After the daytime protestors have returned home, the film captures the mood and tempo of the nocturnal streets with Tsai’s characteristic formal invention. The title is drawn from the lyrics of a 1940s Chinese pop song that plays over the final minutes of the film, which pointedly declare “The beautiful night is slipping away.”

月亮 樹 (The Moon and the Tree) 2021

A short documentary about two Taiwanese artists. Beginning as a rigorous depiction of Lee Pei-jing – a former pop star – undergoing physical therapy, the film metamorphoses into a meditative and nostalgic portrait of wizened actor, Chang Feng.

漫不經心 (Wandering) 2021

A playful meta-exploration of Tsai Ming-liang’s own body of work, Wandering follows a woman as she attends an exhibition of Tsai’s ‘Walker’ films in Yilan, Taiwan. The camera observes her observing the works – capturing her movement, her absorption in the screens, and the passage of time as she passes through the gallery space. Eventually she is joined by Tsai himself, as he watches his own creations within this, a new continuation of his oeuvre. Shot with Tsai’s precise visual invention, this is a mesmeric nesting work that inverts the perspective of viewership.
