While in pre-production on The River 1997, Tsai halted preparations to instead film this powerful television documentary about two HIV-positive men in Taiwan. Over candid, yet affectionate, conversations, he speaks with them about their adolescence, sexuality and the impact their diagnoses have had on their lives. Tsai’s camera largely focuses on himself as interviewer as the two men’s identities are obscured, highlighting the stigma and judgment that existed – and so often continues to exist – around HIV.
