About
François Ozon adapted Water Drops on Burning Rocks from an unproduced play by Fassbinder exploring sexual dynamics across genders and ages. In 1970s Germany, Léopold (Bernard Giraudeau), a smug 50 year-old salesman, coaxes young student Franz (Malik Zidi) to come home with him instead of his fiancée Anna (Ludivine Sagnier). When Franz complies, Léopold seduces him and the two begin living together. When both Anna and a former lover of Léopold's (Anna Levine) show up at his house on the same day, it sparks a series of revelations that come to a tragic head. Using The Bitter Tears of Petra Von Kant as a blueprint, Ozon does not shy away from the theatricality of the source material, staging all the action inside Léopold's house to underline the claustrophobic atmosphere.
