About
This screening will be introduced by Rosie Hays, Australian Cinémathèque.
A tale of tenderness and tension set in a British housing estate, Beautiful Thing follows shy Jamie who’s bullied at school and his secret crush Ste who is athletic and cool but has a chaotic home life. They’re in the heart of working-class London and disclosing his affections is the last thing Jamie thinks is possible. The two boys are neighbours, and their tower block is home to an array of characters trying their best to get by. Jamie’s mum Sandra has a sharp tongue yet is fiercely loving, the antagonistic Leah is expelled from school and worships the music of Mama Cass, Sandra’s soft-hearted hippie boyfriend Troy hopes to fit in, and Leah's mum Rose would just like everyone to keep the noise down. A sweet yet pull-no-punches queer coming of age film.
