About
Claire Denis’ mesmerising masterpiece drifts through the remembrances of a French foreign legion officer as he recalls his days training with a battalion of soldiers on the desert sands of Djibouti. Beau Travail, which translates as ‘good work’, viscerally captures the blood and perspiration sapped out of the soldiers’ bodies as they train. The film contrasts the muted greys of urban France with the sun-drenched, dry terrain of Northern Africa in which the sparkling blue Gulf of Aden extends out beyond the horizon.
