About

Edward Yang’s A Brighter Summer Day is a complex, captivating and compassionate portrait of a generation and an intricate masterwork of New Taiwanese Cinema. Set in the early 1960s, the film is based on a real-life crime that dominated the news headlines in Yang’s youth. It follows teenager Xiao Si’r (Chen Chang), who becomes embroiled in the violent and seemingly romantic world of Taipei’s street gangs. Part gangster film, part family drama, A Brighter Summer Day is universally acclaimed for its precisely rendered and faceted insight into the melancholy of youth.
